Chapter 11

Cyllus hated leaving Savie, but Sora was right. They needed to be quick about obtaining supplies and finding somewhere to stash the ship while they searched for information about the others from their missing pods.

When he turned to follow the others, Savie’s downturned expression as she worried her bottom lip tugged at him. Once more against his normal behavior, he stopped, reached out and caught her fingers to bring her in closer to him. He leaned over to meet her gaze evenly. She wasn’t quite short, but she wasn’t nearly tall enough to look at him eye to eye.

Those luminous blue eyes reached inside and locked onto his heart so tight Cyllus didn’t bother trying to break free. He let himself fall into whatever this would turn out to be. “Will you be alright?”

After all she’d been through, he expected her to be distraught, yet she hadn’t had a meltdown or fallen apart. For someone who came from a world with no prior contact with other humanoid species, she was surprisingly calm.

“I’m fine.”

She was. Almost. But not quite. He’d fix that for her one day. Cyllus shifted his gaze to Reo, who maintained his pose, shoulders leaned back against the wall. His attention was somewhere else as it had been of late.

The others filed out, expecting Cyllus to join them promptly. And he would, but first he needed to assure himself that Savie would be here when he returned in the same state he left her.

“Savie is your priority, Reo.”

Nothing. Reo met Cyllus’ gaze and stared blankly.

“Take care of her,” Cyllus ordered bluntly. “That’s all I’m asking.”

A slow incline of Reo’s head. It would have to be enough. Stroking a hand through Savie’s hair and tucking a section behind her ear, Cyllus kissed her temple and left.

Outside, Sora and Tagan shot him a look over their shoulders as Cyllus joined them. Heads on a swivel, they took in the crowded, bustling port. Sora had landed in a designated slot at the far end of the travel port station.

“I thought we didn’t want to be seen,” Cyllus noted. This wasn’t the open field he’d envisioned when they discussed hiding the ship.

“Sora filed a plan under a masked ship ID. As far as anyone is concerned, this is an antique disposal vessel,” Kelix said.

“Good idea.”

All around, ships of every size and design were guided in and landed. Various species were represented in the rushing flow of bodies. Some in uniforms, some in casual clothes. This particular space station’s port opened up directly amid the colony’s bazaar district so when they walked out, they were in the middle of a vibrant community.

Dianides was known as a place where everything had a price. Overhead signs in glowing lights advertised anything someone could conceive. The air scented of fried delicacies, rich spices and food not created in a replicator. Stall after stall offered hard to find wares and things more common to be bought.

“This way,” Kelix said and strode toward their right.

Cyllus hunched his shoulders and ducked low as he followed.
